The kakadu plum is Australia’s most potent superstar of superfoods and grows wild in abundance across the top end of Northern and Western Australia. This pale pear-green colored oval fruit has a central interior wooden stone like kernel, with a fibrous texture and tart and bitter flavor. It has the highest recorded levels of vitamin C content of any plant in the world, up to 100 times more vitamin C than an orange and five times higher anti-oxidant capability than a blueberry.

Its medicinal uses are endless. The fruit has been an antiseptic and healing remedy by the indigenous people for thousands of years. After harvesting season, the tree sap is used to treat joint inflammation, while the tree bark is applied to the body to treat burns, rashes and infections. The kakadu plum contains phytochemicals such as gallic and ellagic acids.  Gallic acid has antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal activities and shows anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, antimutagenic and anti-bronchodilator activities.  Ellagic acid has anti-carcinogenic effects against a wide range of carcinogens in many human tissues.

While there are other fruits that contain antioxidants, the kakadu plum is unique because it contains both hydrophilic (water-soluble) and lipophilic (oil-soluble) antioxidants.  This combination of antioxidants is much more bio-available to the skin and body, delivering more comprehensive protection from oxidative stress than fruits comprised of only hydrophilic compounds.  Kakadu plum also contains folate (vitamin B9), which plays a key role in repair and synthesis of DNA and can help to protect cells from damage.  With its rich composition of phytochemicals and microelements, the kakadu plum is a powerful weapon against premature aging.
Kakadu plum has many other names depending on where its grown, such as gubinge, gabiny, kabiny, mardorr plum or murunga, bush plum, billygoat and salty plum. I will be using this fruit in many my smoothie recipes and some of my soup recipes in the form of kakadu plum raw-whole powder product, which is derived from certified wild harvested fruit without the kernel.
